Built up stress and some ways that may help
The last year will have put the majority of us under stress of some sort, whether dealing with illness, backlash on businesses, not seeing friends and relatives for long stretches of time, feeling isolated… Now the days are shorter, there is even more reason to find ways to keep positive, feel alive and kicking… for those of us who have anxiety, depression, there are lots of way to regain that inner spark and clarity of thought.
Mindfulness and meditation are great, there are loads of ideas on the internet and you tube is packed with various meditations to enjoy. There are also local therapists who offer free weekly session on their social media. Some people have taken up wild swimming, which is proven to help with depression but also the effects of menopause.
Getting into a routine to meet up with friends even if over zoom helps to feel connected, make it special, cook a meal, make cocktails, have a theme. Try a new restaurant, drive somewhere to enjoy areas that you have always wanted to visit, take up a new class (exercise or even learn a new skill), watch feel good films.
Exercise is so important, do you have a gym membership that is not being used, why not book a session with PT to get back into using the equipment, having a program designed for you or working towards a goal. Most gyms have amazing group classes as well, great way to keep fit and meet like minded people.
Self care is a very important factor. Take time for you, this can be in the form of a massage, facial, even a simple manicure can be a huge pick me up. There are lots of therapists who able to assist you in various ways. Maybe rebook a session with them, or find something new to try.
Long Covid
Over the last year, I have been working remotely and in clinic and have been assisting clients with Covid and long Covid. The body sometimes needs a reminder that it is no longer in fight mode and it is time to start repairing the body to get stronger and help certain areas to reconnect and take a breath after the hardwork of fighting the virus.
More Self care Tips
Even though the days are colder, if is important to keep hydration levels up. Please remember that tea (apart from herbal teas) and coffee are not hydrating even if they have water in them.
Taking supplements helps your immune system be be stronger against germs and bugs. I recommend Ester-C 1000mg (Solgar), Zinc and Vitamin D (in drop form). Enchinacea drops (Vogel).
Try to keep active, walking is one of the easiest ways and also this allows us time to enjoy the world around us. Take some time to reconnect with yourself, sit down and take in a view, listen to the wildlife and the noises they make. I love walking at dusk as the birdsong is incredible.
Eating well, freshly made soups, casseroles are fabulous and ideal to have either curled up by a fire or to share with friends.
Recipe – Roasted cherry tomato soup
Place several handful of cherry tomatoes on a baking tray, as well as whole garlic cloves with skin removed (optional)
Drizzle with oil, mixed herb (optional) and season
Bake until the tomatoes look cooked
Place in a saucepan or blender, add stock, I put a pint in but adjust for your taste
Blend
Serve with chopped spinach and crushed chillies if you wish or lovely slices of toasted sour dough.
Enjoy
Keep safe and healthy
